Protocols for School Cancellations and Delayed Openings

As we enter the winter season, I would like to take the opportunity to remind you of the protocol we follow when school is cancelled or delayed.  In making my decision whether to delay or close school, the safety of both students and staff is paramount.  The decision to cancel or delay the opening of school is based on many factors, including the actual and forecasted weather conditions and discussions with the HWRSD’s Facilities Department and the Hamilton and Wenham Departments of Public Works.  Parents always have the discretion to keep their children home from school if they feel the conditions warrant.

School cancellations and delayed openings will be communicated both through the local media and through direct contact via our Connect ED system.  Once the decision is made to cancel or delay the start of school, it will be communicated through the following process:

  • All Media Communications will be sent out as soon as a decision has been made regardless of the time.  Every effort will be made to communicate the decision before 5:30 AM on the morning of the cancellation/delayed opening.
  • Direct Contact Communications through Connect ED via telephone calls and email messages will be sent out prior to 8:30 PM if a decision to close/delay school has been reached on the prior evening and at 5:45 AM if a decision is made on the morning of the cancellation/delayed opening.
